On 26th December, 1914 the 2nd Rifle Brigade battalion of 25 Brigade, 8th Division moved into the front line trenches at Fauquissart near Laventie in France where an informal Christmas truce was in place and there was no firing by either side. This continued through into the next day but by 28th December normal service was resumed and at 10am the enemy began sniping again and this could well have been the cause of the death of Thomas Ryan on that day.
